Here at Chrome City, we pride ourselves in having ultra-creative and inspiring homies throughout the Chicago area. Each week, the Chrome Chronicle (our news outlet) will share a little bit about these incredible people and why we are excited to feature them as our #ChromeHomie.
Let us introduce our Homie, Katey.
Katey Mcgarr of Edelman
Q: What is your role at Edelman?
A: As an account supervisor at Edelman Digital, I specialize in content and engagement strategies for all sorts of clients – cereal, candy, hotels and garage door openers to name a few! While my days are never the same, my responsibilities include ongoing strategic counsel for clients and colleagues, analyzing online conversations to identifying engagement opportunities and developing content strategies. All in all, it’s my job to make sure the plan is rooted in consumer research and what we’re executing aligns with the overall strategy.
Q: How did you end up in Chicago?
A: After six years in Los Angeles, I was ready for a change of scenery. I wasn’t ready to move back home to New York and visited Chicago for Memorial Day Weekend in 2009 and fell even more in love. I packed up my LA apartment and moved six weeks later on a whim.
Q: What is your favorite part about this city?
A: How beautiful Chicago is no matter what the season. I’m an architecture nut so our skyline makes me proud to live here. Oh, and the fact that unlike NYC we were brilliant enough to build alleys to keep our trash.
Q: How did you meet Alex?
A: My sophomore year when Alex was a freshman, we were both in a Communication Studies course on public speaking. I must have a way with words thanks to that class because I convinced her to join Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and years later move to Chicago!
Q: Who has influenced you the most in your career?
A: Working for Edelman has afforded me so many advancements in my career. I can’t say one individual has influenced my career, but rather the group of talented individuals I’ve worked with at Edelman has shaped the person I am today. I thrive off working with smart, driven people so I love surrounding myself with like minded people!
Q: What inspires or motivates you?
A: Traveling. It may seem cliché, but when I travel it always inspires me, particularly when I visit cultures that are vastly different from my own. Immersing oneself in another culture stimulates ideas that help me expand my understanding of the world and people that I can then incorporate in my daily life.
Q: What is your creative process?
A: I typically start by scribbling a bunch of ideas and questions out to identify what I am looking to achieve creatively. Then I research to validate the direction I’m going in to ensure it resonates with the audience I’m going after while also addressing my client’s goals. Then looking at all I have to work with, I visualize what the final product should look like and get to work bringing it to life, usually with a glass of wine at home where it’s nice and quiet.
Thanks for being a Chrome Homie, Katey!
