#ChromeHomie: Jenny Vyas

February 24, 2016

Here at Chrome City, we pride ourselves in having ultra-creative and inspiring homies throughout the Chicago area. Each week, the Chrome Chronicle (our news outlet) will share a little bit about these incredible people and why we are excited to feature them as our #ChromeHomie.

Let us introduce our Homie, Jenny.

Jenny Vyas, Freelance Digital Branding Consultant

Q: Explain your job position.

A: I'm a freelance Digital Branding consultant. I work with clients across Chicago to build their social media voice and presence, and help develop their website branding and eMarketing plans. In my past life, I've led eCommerce for larger companies, including "The Oprah Store," Oprah's eCommerce store. I am also a mixed media artist (painting) and teach a monthly art class at Soho House. You can find my art on Instagram.

Q: What is your creative process?

A: For clients, I aim to build an authentic voice that is unique to them by getting to know the people behind the brand and the venues I service. My goal is for customers to resonate with the brand digitally and experience the same connection in person. For my paintings, I dive deep into my emotions. I always say, vulnerability is my kryptonite, and I try to paint what I hide from.

Q: What inspires and motivates you?

A: I am constantly inspired by my family, friends and my personal experiences. Drawing from a life experience or emotion and painting that is beyond cathartic for me. Last year, I read Dani Shapiro's "Still Writing," where she talks about "writing for an audience of one." That stayed with me as I began painting and I made it my goal to paint for an audience of one- myself. By doing that, all the noise and pressure of performing or creating for an audience filtered away and my work gained this authenticity that I was seeking my entire life. As I heal my own wounds through my art, the idea that I can spread consciousness though my art and hopefully heal some wounds for others is what motivates me today. Tomorrow, who knows. :)

Q: How did you end up in Chicago?

A: I was born and raised in India and moved to Chicago with my immediate family right after high school. My mom has family here and it seemed like a great place to start a new chapter in all of our lives.

Q: What has most influenced your career?

A: My father. He is my spiritual and intellectual teacher in every way. He teaches me every day to live a conscious life full of intention.

Q: What is your experience with Alex?

A: Alex is one of the most brilliant, driven and fiercely honest women I've met professionally and personally. I met her in early 2015 through our work with a local charity and developed instant admiration for her professionally. Over the past year, we've partnered to work with clients and it has been a great consulting partnership for me. Developing a friendship with her has been a huge bonus!

Thanks for being a Chrome Homie, Jenny!
