Winter Skincare Blog

Holy moly. This Chicago winter came in like a lion. And at Chrome City, we don’t mess around when it comes to combatting the elements with smart skincare. Here are some tips and tricks—and awesome product recs—from the Chrome crew to keep your skin extra hydrated and glowing all season long. Trust us; your dermis will thank you—and your homies are sure to take notice.

ALEX: Vitamin A + C serums have really changed my skin. I had no balance and my hormones totally threw my skin off. I am currently using Dermodality’s Vitamin A, Hyluronic C-Ester and Vitamin C serum every night. I’m also obsessed with the budget-friendly moisturizer Bee Friendly. This all-natural, organic lotion for day and night is great for traveling.

KIRA: My M.O. is to moisturize and use SPF every morning. Living in LA, it doesn’t get nearly as cold as in Chicago, so the winter can really creep up on you. However, it certainly gets extremely

dry here. (We haven’t had any rain in 6 months!) That being said, I wear a thick night cream or sleep mask to thoroughly moisturize every night. And in the morning I always apply both Summer Friday’s Jet Lag moisturizer and Skinceuticals Tinted SPF. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean your skin is immune to sun damage!

ELISE: Now that I’m in my ’40s, using quality anti-aging products is a must. My go-to’s are Red Currant Protective Moisturizer SPF 30 (day) and Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil (night), both by Eminence. But I’m also going to let you in on my secret for an instant refresh: PDO Threads.

Basically they are these absorbable surgical threads that are placed under your skin to smooth wrinkles or give you a little lift as an alternative to filler (which makes you look plastic) and where Botox can't go (neck + jawline). Each thread causes cell regeneration and collagen growth! It's like these targeted, mini facelifts for those of us who want to look natural as we age “gracefully.” I’m beyond happy with my results! I mean, if it’s good enough for Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s good enough for me.

And here’s a sweet promo code for PDO Threads at my favorite spot, Lustre Skin Boutique...

JESSICA: For me, buying new skincare products is my favorite kind of retail therapy. I’m a sucker

for serums, masks, creams and even vitamins “for glowing skin.” What I’ve learned after years of testing out so many different things is that drinking water is the most essential ingredient for ultra-hydrated skin and hair—no matter what products I’m using throughout the year. In the summer, I’m on top of my water intake drinking 3 liters per day. Yet, when the winter rolls around, drinking plain water feels like more of a chore. To make it enticing, I add sprigs of fresh herbs and roots like rosemary, mint, ginger and a drop of black pepper essential oil to mugs of hot water and drink it throughout the day. It’s like giving myself mini facial steams throughout the day. To get more water from the outside in, I love using oils like Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Bath and Massage Oil during and after warm baths to lock moisture into my skin. It leaves me feeling dewy and soft even during the dryest, coldest winter days.

ALLISON: I’m going honest... It’s a solid skincare routine for me if I remember to take my makeup

off from the night before. That disclaimer being said, I do try to give a little extra love to my skin every now and then by regularly using Murad’s hydrating toner and doing face masks from Que Bella to de-stress. I also try to find products that have an SPF built-in due to my light complexion and sensitivity to the sun. Both my Olay moisturizer and Maybelline makeup primer currently have SPF 30!

BAILEY: When the winter rolls around, I definitely need to switch up my skincare routine. I become

extremely dry and have to do whatever I can to keep my skin moisturized. I have been obsessed with Drunk Elephant products for the past year and when I really want to go all in on taking care of my skin, this is my process: I start with washing my face with the Drunk Elephant Jelly Cleanser and follow that up with their T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial. This at home facial makes my skin feel refreshed and clear. It's amazing! If I’m going to bed, I will toss on their Virgin Marula Antioxidant Face Oil. But if I am going out for the day or I’m about to put on some makeup, I will finish up my process with their Protini Polypeptide Moisturizer (this is an everyday product for me). And I can't forget some chapstick! My favorite is Aquaphor Lip Repair. With this arsenal, I’m ready for a brutal Chicago winter!

JESSIE: I am very into make-up and skincare. My go-tos are my Purity Made Simple cleanser by Philosophy and Ole Henriken Balancing Force Oil Control Toner. My skin gets oily throughout the day, and I have noticed that with this toner it doesn’t get as oily. Then I will use a black tea kombucha antioxidant essence. It sounds crazy but I have noticed my skin is so much brighter. It helps to not only brighten but help prevent pollution and dirt from getting into my skin. Lastly, I will moisturize and, depending on day/night, I will use a heavier or a lighter one. With all this my skin is ready to take on this Chicago winter!

VICKY: I am the queen of natural skincare. Everything I use is locally made, cruelty free and vegan! I switched over to using all natural products 3 years ago, and ever since my skin has been so happy. Some of my favorite brands are Scratch Goods (located here in West loop), Glossier, Lush, and Burt’s Bees—and Trader Joe’s has this amazing Acai facial scrub I can’t live without. Every morning I refresh my face with rose water, a coffee eye butter (Scratch Goods), witch hazel oil and, most importantly, my Jade Roller. When winter hits, I typically keep my same routine, but use a heavy zinc oil in the morning to ensure my skin doesn’t dry up. I like to switch up which face washes I use every morning and night (I have four different options, LOL). And before bed, I play around with mixing different serums and oils for intense hydration.
